Devotional – From the depths of my being, bless the LORD – Psalm 103:1

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, from the depths of my being, bless His holy name”

The word “soul” is translated from Greek. The original word literally means “breath”.  People believe that our breath is our life. Indeed, the Bible tells us our soul is found in the breath God gives us.

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.  Genesis 2:7

Therefore, Psalm 103:1 tells us about our meaning of existence –  to bless the LORD with our life. Bless His name – to give Him glory from the depths of our heart.

How can we have an inner life to bless the LORD this way?  It cannot be done by law and commandment. It can only accomplish through grace (of our LORD Jesus)

17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17

Grace means gift, the gift from Jesus Christ is the forgiveness of sin, and we become the children of God. Furthermore, we receive the eternal life through the power of the Resurrection.  That eternal life is a new life from above, starting from the time we believe. In another word, we can experience the power of the Resurrection even in this life.  Our own life is corrupted by sin, it is self-centered, seeking our own good and own glory.  But the power of the Resurrection can change a person from inside out.  That is the real transformation.  With this, we can joyfully give thanks from the depths of our heart and we can bless the LORD.
